Music will fill the Islands from 8 January to 12 February 2016. The 32nd International Music Festival (FIMC) once again returns to stages around the Canary Islands.
The FIMC, which has consolidated its status as one of the most important events of its type and (as is to be expected) boasts a programme of outstanding quality, will once again use music as a vehicle for communication and cultural promotion, ensuring the Canary Islands remain a national and international benchmark for musical quality.
Organised by the Government of the Canary Islands in collaboration with the various Cabildos and sponsors, this edition of the festival offers a total of 45 concerts, divided into a series of six symphony performances at each of the main concert venues (namely the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Adán Martín Auditorium in Tenerife), four chamber-music concerts in each of the island capitals and a further 25 performances at several unique venues in La Palma, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Gomera, La Graciosa and El Hierro.
The programme will feature a number of leading figures from the world of opera, including the tenor Juan Diego Flórez, the conductors Massimo Zanetti, Andrés Orozco Estrada, Thomas Hengelbrock, Jukka Pekka Saraste and Ivan Fischer, the pianists Denis Matsuev, Dimitris Sgouros and Iván Martín and the oboist Lucas Macías Navarro. Joining them will be the prestigious London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Budapest Festival Orchestra, the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, along with other musical ensembles such as Cameristi della Scala, La Petite Bande, Arbós Trio, Galdós Ensemble, Trondheim Soloists, Signum Quartet and the Ainur Chamber Choir, not to mention the much-loved, world-famous Vienna Boys' Choir.
Over the course of its 30-plus years, the Canary Islands Music Festival has become an international benchmark for festivals of classical music, not only thanks to its outstanding artistic quality, but also due to the unique fact that its January and February scheduling makes it the festival that kicks off the musical year in Europe. It is the only event of its type that takes place in winter, albeit a winter that, thanks to the mild climate enjoyed by the Canary Islands, is more akin to a pleasant spring in comparison to the rest of Europe.
The geographical diversity of the Canary Islands and the fact that performances will take place throughout the archipelago is another distinctive feature that is greatly admired by audiences as well as the artists that come here and help make our festival unique.
