Pilgrimage an festivites of San Agustín

SAN AGUSTIN POPULAR PILGRIMAGE. ARAFO

The San Agustín popular pilgrimage started in 1975, as part of the programme of events for the town's fiestas, and was declared an event of tourist interest in 1983.

It commemorates a miracle which occurred in 1751, when San Agustín intervened to send a storm to clear the rubble from the Añavingo spring, which had been buried by a landslide.

The Romería de San Agustín (religious procession) is held on the last Saturday in August, as part of the festivities in honour of patron saints St. John, St. Augustine and St. Bernard.  The grand traditional procession leaves the Plazoleta de la Cruz at 5 p.m. and wends its way through the streets.
Numerous folk groups, attired in local costume, also participate. Leading the procession is the figure of St. Augustine, the local clergy and dignitaries of the Villa de Arafo, accompanied by the band. On arrival, the traditional Eucharist is held.
The Events Committee would like to remind all participants that traditional costume is required.
